New ELLC online module on Voluntary Assisted Dying and the law

A new online module on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) laws is now available as part of End of Life Law for Clinicians, a free national training program for medical practitioners, medical students, nurses, paramedics, allied and other health professionals.

The module explores:

• VAD laws in Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia, and Queensland, including eligibility criteria and processes

• The role different health professionals may play in relation to VAD

• Whether health professionals and institutions have to provide VAD.

On completion of the module, clinicians should be able to:

• Describe the legal status of voluntary assisted dying (VAD) in Australia

• Understand the eligibility criteria and processes for accessing VAD in jurisdictions where it is lawful

• Understand the legal obligations of health professionals arising from VAD laws

• Differentiate between VAD and other practices, including providing pain and symptom relief and withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatment.
