University College Cork, Ireland, is looking for participants in a study to examine current and future roles of paramedics operating within their state/territory.
While Paramedicine is an evolving profession globally there are disparities within the various state/territories that may not be fully captured within the literature. The evolution of the community paramedic role may create opportunities for the paramedic to evolve into many other areas of healthcare other than the traditional emergency roles. There is a global shortage of healthcare professionals especially within the areas of physicians and nurses that will place significant demand on ambulance services and hospital emergency departments.
General Practice is also facing a workforce crisis of its own in Ireland and abroad. Access to primary care is becoming increasingly difficult as the prevalence of chronic disease with comorbidities continues to rise. Emergency hospital care in Ireland is going through a state of reconfiguration that continue to centralise and urbanise services. This will place greater demand on ambulance services as their ability to manage and convey patients within rural and remote regions is becoming increasingly difficult.
The Covid-19 pandemic placed an unprecedented demand on our health services that needed an innovative response. Paramedics played a key role in this response and lead the way with crisis management teams setting up mobile and static swabbing and vaccination centres only ever seen in times of major incident or national crisis. As a result of this response stakeholders within the health services sector are beginning to see the true potential of the Paramedic with their ability to adapt and evolve far beyond the norm.
