Job Opportunity: Indigenous Paramedic Program - QAS Cadet

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this country. We recognise their connection to land, wind, water and community. We pay respect to them, their cultures and to their Elders past, present and future.

The QAS has developed its own Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety Framework and is actively working towards implementing the strategies and initiatives within this plan to increase its cultural capability.

QAS is committed to improving health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and increasing workforce participation particularly within the health workforce.

In July 2023 QAS released its Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples embedding this commitment into all aspects of our organisation.

Our organisation is committed to growing its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural capability to:

  • enhance the quality of culturally appropriate services provided to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
  • develop and maintain relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations
  • increase the employment representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from Indigenous communities within the QAS.

Indigenous Paramedic Program

The Indigenous Paramedic Program focus areas include:

  • providing access and equity in education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aspiring to work in the space of pre-hospital ambulance response
  • identifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders with a strong interest in health care who have the support of their community
  • developing individuals to achieve their full potential
  • fostering the principles of reconciliation within everyday practice.

The program provides a structured and supportive educational pathway with the added benefits of full-time employment within the pre-hospital emergency response sector. This program offers on-the-job clinical supervision from Paramedics and additional learning support throughout the program.

The program education pathway has been tailored to accommodate various learning needs and capabilities. It provides a scaffolded program with several accreditation milestones available along the way. The QAS has partnered with the Central Queensland University to deliver a unique learning and employment opportunity. The program has been designed to equip participants with the theoretical knowledge and developed skills required to provide clinical assessment and care in the emergency pre-hospital environment.
