POSITION SUMMARY

St John PNG is advertising for Australian-Registered Paramedics to provide an embedded paramedic response for an organisation in the mining sector. Your primary responsibility will be responding to provide medical assistance to staff and contractors at the organisation’s plant, located on an island in New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea.

The scope of the role includes:

  • Embedded paramedic reporting through to the Emergency Response Team (ERT) at the plant site
  • Paramedic responds with the ERT to any medical emergencies within the plant and mine site area and provides pre-hospital care prior to handover to local Medical Centre.
  • On-call in case of emergency call out during off hours (i.e. while on site for day or night shifts).
  • Responsible for maintaining medical kit in the ambulance, fire truck, and possibly checking of first aid and AEDs on site.
  • Upskilling and mentoring the ERT members in medical response to accidents through setting up and observing medical response training drills (table top, live exercise) – All ERT have either standard or advanced first aid certificates.

Role duration:

  • 6 months full-time on a 22 on/ 20 off roster
  • Roster (TBC): 11 x 12-hour Day Shifts/ 11 x 12-hour Night Shifts/ 20 days off / 2 days travel to return to site

POSITION CONTEXT You will report to the Emergency Response Team (ERT) manager on site. You will respond with a member of the ERT.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & OUTCOMES

This position will ensure successful delivery of:

  • Project health services to the standard expected of the client and St John.
  • High-quality training and mentoring for ERT members.
  • Emergency response to incidents and emergencies requiring paramedical care

This position’s responsibilities include:

  • Providing paramedical care to patients in the out of hospital environment on a mine site and transfer to local Medical Centre
  • Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality health care to patients
  • On-call during off hours (i.e. while on site).
  • Maintaining medical kit in the ambulance, fire truck, and possibly checking of first aid and AEDs on site
  • Upskilling and mentoring the ERT members in medical response to accidents
  • Doing all that is possible to ensure an excellent patient, customer and client experience and positively representing St John Ambulance to customers and clients

The duties and responsibilities represented in this Position Description do not limit the duties to be performed, and there is the ability to undertake other suitable capacity-building projects that align with the paramedic’s skills and experience.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The following criteria must be met for you to be considered for this position:

Essential

  • At least three years’ experience working as a paramedic with an ambulance service recognised by the Council of Ambulance Authorities
  • Bachelor of Paramedicine or equivalent qualification and experience (e.g. Diploma of Paramedicine with appropriate experience)
  • Registration as a paramedic with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Post graduate qualifications in critical care or paramedic education
  • Advanced Life Support level 2 or equivalent qualification
  • Experience working in an aeromedical and/or rescue environment
  • Experience in remote/ austere or mining environments
  • Experience facilitating paramedic training in the workplace or at a job site
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE)
